Help students get to college by helping area high school students fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Through a program organized by the Austin Chamber of Commerce, area high schools participate in Financial Aid Saturdays during the months of February and March. Community volunteers help students submit applications to secure the financial aid they may need at these scheduled Financial Aid Saturdays events.
The DDCE is a sponsor of Financial Aid Saturdays along with local businesses and other colleges and universities. Dr. Rose Martinez, executive director of the UT Outreach-San Antonio and UT Outreach-Rio Grande Valley, serves on the Chamber's College Readiness and Enrollment Taskforce (CREST) and has organized a FAFSA training session at UT Austin. All volunteers must attend a training session. DDCE volunteers are encouraged to attend the training to be held at UT on Wednesday, February 1. The session will be 4:00 pm -5:30 pm in Mezes Hall 2.120.
All Financial Aid Saturday events are scheduled on Saturdays, 8:30 am to 12:30 pm at metro Austin high schools including a number of surrounding communities. A list of the Financial Aid Fridays will be distributed during the training session. If you would like to volunteer for this worthwhile effort, please RSVP by emailing Gilbert Zavala, Vice President of Education and Talent Development, at gzavala at austinchamber.com.
