one of our most beloved software titles a few years ago—back when animated GIFs were still cool—was Jasc's Animation Shop. In just a few clicks you could make an entire GIF from pre-existing frames. It was like magic. But, Corel bought Jasc, and Animation Shop became a casualty of acquisition.

While not as advanced as our beloved Animation Shop, we have found a way to make an animated GIF just as simply with an website called GifGear.

Click Add Frame at the top of the page to start your GIF.

Click Choose File, then select the first frame for your Gif. Click Upload. Repeat this for all frames in your GIF.

Your frames appear across the top of the screen. On the right, choose a size for your GIF. If all of your frames are already the same size, and a good size for the place where you want to use your GIF, just select Auto.


Choose a delay option. This takes the place of the traditional Frame Rate option used in Animation Shop and other GIF-making software. Generally, .5 is about right for a delay between frames.

If you want to add an effect, like a fade in, choose from the list under Effect.

Beneath the preview of your image, click Done.

Your GIF displays in a popup. Click Download to save it to your computer.


For quick GIFs when you already have the frames, GIF Gear is definitely worth a try. The interface is clean, the options are useful and even those with no graphic knowledge can easily make a GIF with the default settings. While it does not completely replace Animation Shop, it is a step in the right direction.
